The following suggests by 1861, the dyeing business had by then folded and a conscious decision had been made (or forced upon them) by Samuel and his family to involve themselves in steam railway.
1861 Census: Samuel, aged 50, living at 57 Carrington St, Derby, close to railway. Wife Patience died 1857. Jane (21) later to become Jane Antill (see panel below) and Ellen (19) listed as domestic servants. Edward, aged 18 and Samuel, who was later to move to Leicester and aged 17, are listed as Stovegrate Fitters. John and Alfred are listed as Plumbers.
1871 Census: this census has Samuel aged 60, living at 13 Calvert Street, Derby. even closer to railway.
